HS code vs HTS code

HS is the shared 6-digit system used in many countries. HTS is the 10-digit U.S. import schedule. If the goods enter the United States, you need the HTS, not only the HS.

What HS and HTS stand for

People mix the two names. The letters point to different schedules.

HS: Harmonized System

The World Customs Organization maintains a 6-digit nomenclature. Many countries start from those six digits, then add their own extra digits.

HTS: Harmonized Tariff Schedule

The United States publishes a 10-digit import schedule (USITC). CBP uses that line on entry. This site looks up those 10-digit lines.

HTS code in shipping

On a commercial invoice or a booking, people often write “HS code” and mean a 6-digit heading. A U.S. import entry asks for the 10-digit HTS. A factory that only has 8471.30 has not yet given you the U.S. line.
